A series of Taiwan frozen delights, such as Ginger Vegetarian-Duck Hot Pot, Vegetarian Mushroom Fried Rice, Roasted Sweet Potato and Crystal Balls with various fillings, made their debut here in conjunction with “Taiwan Food Fair 2011” and would be sold exclusively in nine* of Sheng Siong’s stores. In addition, Taiwan fruits and vegetables# that are in season, Taiwanese Peng Lai Rice, vinegar-based health drinks and delicious snacks, are also featured in this fair. With total products exceeding 500 types, customers would be spoilt for choice.
Sheng Siong’s “Taiwan Food Fair 2011” is supported by Taiwan Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, in partnership with Taiwan Changhua County Government and Wan Shen Science and Technology Agriculture Co. Ltd. Thus, both the newly-crowned Changhua “Kyoho Grape Princess” and the first runner-up came to Singapore specially to attend the Opening Ceremony of the Fair at BLK 209 New Upper Changi Road (Bedok Central)’s Sheng Siong Supermarket. They also participated by presenting a native folk dance that reflects the vibrancy and health of Taiwan people and their produce.
“Taiwan Food Fair 2011” was declared open with the sounding of a gong, a traditional yet symbolic way to celebrate in Taiwan, led by its Guest-of-Honour, Mdm Shih Yea-Ping, Representative of Taipei Representative Office in Singapore. Mr Lai Chen-Kou, Secretary-General, Taiwan Changhua County Government and Mr Lim Hock Chee, Managing Director, Sheng Siong Supermarket Pte Ltd, then took turns to sound the gong too.
Mr Lim Hock Chee said, “The objective of organising this fair is in line with our corporate mission, which is to provide customers with quality products at reasonable prices as well as excellent service. Taiwan is known internationally for its in-depth and advanced research and development in agriculture and related food technologies. With the strong promotion of Taiwan produce and products by the various sectors, our local consumers are now quite familiar with Taiwan’s premium fruits and vegetables, food specialties and premium convenience food products.”
Mr Lim Hock Chee added that, “When Sheng Siong first introduces a Taiwan-themed food fair last year, response from our customers was very encouraging. This time round, we are selling more than 500 types of Taiwan products, far more than the 300 on offer last year. The main highlights include the very popular Kyoho grapes, King Mangoes, Muskmelons, assorted types of mushroom, as well as healthy vinegar-based drinks, dried food and brand new frozen products that are available for sale only in our stores.”
“According to Taiwan’s Customs, Taiwan’s agricultural exports to Singapore was 81 million USD (approximately 98.82 million SGD) last year and Singapore was Taiwan’s tenth largest agricultural export market, of which fruits and vegetables amounted to 11.86 million USD, showing a year-on-year growth of 25%. In the first half of this year (January to June), fruits and vegetables exported from Taiwan to Singapore exceeded 7.8 million USD. It is believed that sales of Taiwan agricultural produce in Singapore will also achieve significant growth, “ said Mdm Shih Yea-Ping, Representative of Taipei Representative Office in Singapore.
After the event proper for the opening ceremony, Mdm Shih conducted a cooking demonstration on the spot, with quality vegetables from Taiwan, attracting more customers to Taiwan premium produce.
