Sheng Siong Breaks into New Era by Investing S$65 million on Customised Distribution Centre

Posted on 1st Jun 2009 @ 5:12 PM

Singapore, 1 June 2009 – Sheng Siong, Singapore’s home-grown and third-largest retailer, breaks into new era by announcing plans to build a customised distribution centre at Mandai Link Road. The total investment is expected to come up to S$65 million, with construction costs constituting about S$40 million.

The groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction took place at its future site today and was graced by Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Manpower.

This event signifies an important milestone for Sheng Siong’s continuing business growth in Singapore, as its current distribution centre at Marsiling Road with a site area of 8,796 square metres, is unable to cope with the increasing demand from the 22 outlets.

The new 2.32 hectares (or 23,205 square metres) site will also house Sheng Siong’s headquarters, including the back office functions undertaken by its sister company, C M M Marketing Management Pte Ltd (“CMM”).

Mr Lim Hock Chee, Managing Director, Sheng Siong and CMM, said, “The new distribution centre is a crucial step towards supporting the steady growth we anticipate in our supermarket outlets. It will re-engineer our supply chain processes, increase efficiency and cut manpower, transportation and fuel costs by some 10% or even more in the long run.”

With the setting up of the new distribution centre, most of Sheng Siong’s supplies will be routed there for consolidation and redistribution by outlet destination, resulting in only a handful of deliveries to each store per day. The increased supply chain efficiency also helps to reduce inventory and hence, storage space at retail outlets, enabling wider product ranges and choices to be carried. Moreover, a greater use of IT will significantly reduce administration for conducting business with its numerous suppliers.

Besides that, as the new distribution centre is many times bigger than the existing one, it will provide depth and breadth for CMM to develop more house products and brands for the Sheng Siong outlets and at an even faster pace. This will expand their value chain and offer a wider range of products to consumers.

In an effort to seek out new areas of growth and value-add along with the expansion, Sheng Siong will implement the cold chain standard recommended by the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) and SPRING Singapore. This will not only ensure and uphold food standards, but also reduce food wastage caused by improper storage.

The new distribution centre, comprising a 4-storey warehouse and 5-storey administrative building, will be an environmentally friendly development, as it intends to comply with “BCA Green Mark” requirements – a green building rating system to evaluate a building for its environmental impact and performance.

The building is expected to be completed by April in the year 2011.

Commending Sheng Siong on their continuous capability development efforts, Mrs Kee Ai Nah, Director, Lifestyle, SPRING Singapore said, "We congratulate Sheng Siong for embarking on a new phase of its expansion. Sheng Siong is an inspiring example of a humble SME that stayed focused and grew steadily to become Singapore's third largest supermarket chain. This new distribution centre and HQ will not only greatly enhance the company’s efficiency and productivity, but catapult Sheng Siong to greater heights in terms of product variety and corporate image."
